The Society’s history reflects the changing landscape of interpreting and translation. Originally founded as the Korean Society of Conference Interpreting (KSCI), with conference interpreting at the center of its academic activities, the Society gradually broadened its scope to encompass diverse forms of interpreting and translation as well as a wider range of related research. Through the regular organization of academic conferences and the publication of its scholarly journal, the Society has fostered sustained scholarly exchange and contributed to the development of interpreting and translation studies as an academic discipline. Its international engagement also expanded through scholarly collaboration, including its cooperation with Université Sorbonne Nouvelle in France on the international journal FORUM, which began in 2003. KSCI marked its 20th anniversary with an international conference in 2018, and in 2019, FORUM became the first journal in the field of interpreting and translation published in Korea to be indexed in Scopus.

This broader academic vision was further reflected in the adoption of the English name Korean Society for Translation and Interpreting (KSTI), replacing the former Korean Society of Conference Interpreting (KSCI). These developments reflect the Society’s commitment to responding to changes in both research and professional practice. Its expanded scope is evident in its conferences, publications, and scholarly activities, as well as in its efforts to foster open discussion and bring together researchers from diverse areas of research and at different stages of their academic careers. The Society’s journal, Interpretation and Translation, likewise brings together diverse perspectives, topics, and approaches, contributing to the continued development of the field.
